How to Get Married in Hawaii

Who wouldn’t want to get married in Hawaii? Fabulous beaches, lush tropical spaces, resorts--the list of Hawaiian attractions goes on. A wedding in Hawaii can be an unforgettable experience. Setting up a wedding in this island paradise requires a little planning before the big day.

  1. Step 1

    Draw up a guest list. Create invitations and mail after other details of wedding have been finalized.

  2. Step 2

    Book a wedding venue and obtain the services of a wedding official. You will want to plan far in advance for this step. Good venues fill up quickly.

  3. Step 3

    Reserve a location for the reception. Also, set up catering and entertainment for the reception.

  4. Step 4

    Arrange for decorations, clothing and flowers. Register wedding gifts if desired.

  5. Step 5

    Set up hotel or other accommodations if necessary. Wait to do this step after RSVP’s have come in from guests.

  6. Step 6

    Apply for a marriage license. The application costs $50. You have 30 days from the issuance of the license to get married in the state of Hawaii.

  7. Step 7

    Get married and aloha.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cousins can get married in Hawaii, so long as they are not first cousins. However, same sex marriage is not allowed in the state.
  • You can be as young as 16 and still receive a marriage license, so long as you have parental consent.
  • Wedding officials will not perform the ceremony if your marriage license has expired. You are free to apply again, but this costs you another $50.
