How to Filet a Salmon

If you love seafood, you can save money by purchasing whole fish. Salmon is delicious and once your learn how to filet it, you'll be able to cook lots of yummy meals for your family. Learning to filet salmon is easy, even for the novice chef.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cutting board
  • Fresh salmon
  • Filet knife
  • Cold water
  1. Step 1

    Clean your cutting board, making sure to use hot water and antibacterial soap so that your fish isn't contaminated.

  2. Step 2

    Sharpen your filet knife.

  3. Step 3

    Lay the fish on the cutting board.

  4. Step 4

    Remove the innards by slicing down the underside and discarding the inside substance.

  5. Step 5

    Cut off the tail, fins, gills and head and discard them as well.

  6. Step 6

    Rinse the fish with cold running water. You may need to rinse your cutting board as well.

  7. Step 7

    Cut the fish down the backbone, peeling the meat and skin away from the bone on both sides. You may need to use your knife to cut the meat from the rib cage.

  8. Step 8

    Separate the skin from the meat. To do this, put the filet skin side down and use your knife to cut between the skin and the meat.

  9. Step 9

    Rinse the filets with cold water.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can buy fresh fish at a seafood market, or you can ask your local supermarket when fresh orders will be delivered.
  • Use a sharp knife to avoid injuries.
  • Use caution when cutting with the knife.
  • Make sure you cook your fish thoroughly to kill any bacteria found on the fish.
