How to Apply for a Marriage License in Oregon

Oregon offers many outdoor wedding sites, from beaches to the numerous state and federal parks filled with lush forests. Before you walk down the aisle, you’ll need a marriage license to make it legal.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Optional consenting adult if either the bride or groom is 17 years old
  • Identification
  • Cash
  • Certified divorce decree or death certificate for any previous marriage

Step1
Collect the birth certificate, driver’s license, military ID or valid passport for both the bride and groom.
Step2
Gather any certified final divorce decree if either party has been married previously, dated at least one day before applying for the marriage license. Alternatively, a certificate of death of a previous spouse should be obtained.
Step3
Visit the Oregon state Web site to find the link to the county office where you’ll be married.
Step4
Visit the county Web site to find offices in the county.
Step5
Head to the most convenient county office with bride, groom, documentation and $60 in cash between three and 60 days before the ceremony.

Tips & Warnings

  • Both the bride and the groom must be present to apply for and sign the marriage license.
  • The marriage license must be applied for in the county where the ceremony will take place.
  • Females and males under the age of 17 may not be married in Oregon. A bride or groom 17 years of age must be accompanied by a consenting legal guardian or parent to apply for a marriage license.
  • Marriage licenses are valid for 60 days.
  • There is a three day waiting period from the time the license is issued until it can be used.
  • Proxy, first cousin, common law and same sex marriages are forbidden.
