Until the law comes around, the closest a loving, committed same-sex couple can get to marriage is to register for a civil union in Connecticut. Although not recognized by the federal government, you will receive limited tax benefits when you register for a civil union in Connecticut.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • license
  • identification

Step1
Be eligible. You must be 18 years old or older, not already in a civil union or marriage, of the same gender as your partner, and no more closely related than first cousin.
Step2
Apply for a civil union license. Appear in person with your partner at the vital records office in the area where you plan to be joined. Bring $30 for an application fee, government issued
identification, and be prepared to make a sworn statement saying that the information you provide is true.
Step3
Have your license officiated. Once you obtain your license, you have 65 days to get it certified. You can do this with any person who performs marriages.
Step4
Enjoy your life together! Once you get your license certified, it is up to the official to return it to the office of vital records.

Tips & Warnings

  • Civil union licenses can be certified by a judge, justice of the peace or clergy.
  • There is no residency requirement, blood test or waiting period.
  • Other states and the federal government will not recognize your civil union.
  • Private employers are not required to grant you benefits based on your union.
