One of the many costs associated with a wedding is the announcements. Between invitations, newspaper ads and the amount of stamps needed to send these things off to people, you can spend a lot of money on these. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are ways to still produce quality announcements while on a budget. Here are some tips to save money on engagement announcements.

Things You'll Need:

  • budget
  • guest list
  1. Step 1

Decide on a date with your fiancé. This gives you flexibility in regards to the date, and what exactly will be on the wedding announcement. Announce to your friends and family which date you’ve decided.

  2. Step 2

Set the venue based on the date you have chosen. When you have both the date and location locked down, the announcement itself can be spread around by anyone, saving you time and money.

  3. Step 3

Choose your wedding party. Decide with your fiancé who will serve in what role, and take the time to sit down with them and ask or call them up. If they are in the wedding party, you will know you will see them again, and that will save you an invitation for each person.

  4. Step 4

Begin spreading the announcement via word of mouth. Since you are armed with knowing what the date is, you can tell the people where and when it will be. Have your wedding party and family members do the same.

  5. Step 5

Look at invitation designs from your local bridal shop, printing company or any other option. Look for something simple yet classy, and see if there are any extra costs associated with buying from that company (and how those can be removed).

  6. Step 6

Create a guest list of the people you plan to invite. Put in the effort to locate each person you have placed on your guest list, and see how many of those people are able to receive an invitation directly from you instead of it being sent in the mail. Postage adds up, you can easily cut out up to a few hundred dollars simply by keeping invitations in your car or handing them out at the bachelor party or bridal shower.

  7. Step 7

Identify how many people have not yet received an invitation about two weeks prior to the wedding, and see if giving them a verbal invitation would be acceptable. Just giving them all a call would save you a lot in postage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some printing companies charge you in bulk, so do not over-order. This is the biggest detriment in the effort to save money on announcements.
  • Weigh the effectiveness of getting your engagement information out in the local media. Usually, these are done more out of pleasure rather than necessity, so determine how necessary it is to do this.
  • Your employer won’t look fondly upon you using company time or resources to mail out your wedding invitations, so make sure you obtain proper permission before you do any of this at work.
