Planning a wedding reception can be a stressful experience. If you find a good DJ, this can help to take some of the worries out of the planning. You will want to have everything in order before the reception to make things run smoothly. One of the most important things to do is to coordinate the schedule of events you want at your reception with the DJ so the DJ knows what to do ahead of time.

Things You'll Need:

  • DJ
  1. Step 1

Locate a reputable DJ for your reception. Ask around to people that have gotten married recently to find out which DJ they used and if they were happy with the DJ. Book the DJ well in advance to ensure their availability.

  2. Step 2

Decide how you want the events at your reception to take place. Make a schedule of events and be sure to write the schedule down so you will not forget anything. Check out books on reception planning so you don’t forget anything.

  3. Step 3

Give the schedule of events to the DJ ahead of time. If you are having trouble setting up the schedule, ask the DJ for suggestions. The DJ will probably have some good insights into what works well with the reception’s schedule of events and what will not.

  4. Step 4

Keep in contact with the DJ prior to the reception. Contact the DJ from time to time to ensure they haven’t forgotten the date and any of the details involving the schedule of events.

  5. Step 5

Inform the DJ prior to the reception if there are any changes to the schedule of events. Give the DJ plenty of warning if things change. Waiting until the last minute may cause the DJ to appear unprofessional.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have any special music you want played let the DJ know in advance. They cannot play something they don’t have.
  • If you have any special music you want played let the DJ know in advance. They cannot play something they don’t have.
  • Avoid hiring friends and family members to DJ your reception. A friend or family member may be more apt to change the schedule of events without asking permission.
  • Don’t ask too much of the DJ when planning the schedule of events at the reception. The DJ’s job is pretty much cut and dried. Asking them to go above and beyond their normal duties could be disastrous.
