  1. Step 1

Sit down with family, friends and your bridal party and discuss what you want your wedding to be like. Take into consideration the formalness of the event, the reception and your particular wants in a gown. Sharing these ideas with your group will allow you to consider many options.

  2. Step 2

Take notes on everyone’s comments and use them to make your decision. Friends and family are one of the best resources to find out what people think looks best on you, and the more opinions the better. Use their input to develop a picture in your mind of what you want in a wedding dress.

  3. Step 3

Get online and head to your favorite search engine. Type in “custom made wedding dresses” in the search field and press Enter. While there are many bridal store sites that offer custom-made options, it’s a good idea to start with a general search, as this will provide you with countless sites to choose from.

  4. Step 4

Search through several sites to get ideas on what you want. Most custom-made manufacturers offer photo portfolios of their work and, whether you choose to utilize them as your dressmaker or not, you can still browse the photos to get ideas.

  5. Step 5

Take notes on the dresses that you like. Don’t be afraid to mix and match here, as this will be custom work that will be a unique expression of your personal taste. Feel free to put together a skirt from one photo or site and a bodice from another.

  6. Step 6

Clip pictures from bridal magazines and consider going to a bridal salon or show to get ideas. As always, take plenty of notes and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Any reputable bridal shop will have well trained staff members that can answer your questions.

  7. Step 7

Visit local custom dressmakers in your area to discuss your dress. Larger towns will have at least one skilled tailor that can do the job. Interview the dressmaker to assess his or her skills and ask to see samples of their work. Any reputable tailor should be proud to showcase their work.

  8. Step 8

Decide on which option you want to use. Local dressmakers take the hassle and worry out of having a dress custom made, but the cost can be prohibitive. Online custom dressmakers can be less expensive, but you are dealing with a much larger company and thus the chances of them making an error or shipping damage can occur.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many sites offer design options, fabrics and embroidery that are specific to bridal gowns. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the terminology used in describing them. You wouldn’t want to approve an A-line bodice with a Chantilly lace overlay not knowing what the dressmaker is talking about!
  • Take your time and be thorough. Take lots of notes and look at several options before deciding on a custom dressmaker. For less hassle, it is wise to strongly consider a local dressmaker who has a much more personal interest in making a local customer happy. The success of their business depends on your satisfaction much more than a large, impersonal manufacturer.
  • In nearly all cases the dress that you have custom made is absolutely non-refundable. All sales are final after you approve the design regardless of the customer’s satisfaction with the final product. Make sure that you have carefully researched your design and are completely happy with your decision. Custom work is usually on a contractual basis and the dressmaker will offer no warranties beyond workmanship and material quality, so if you change your mind you’re generally stuck with what you ordered.
  • Leave plenty of time for shipping and final alterations. It can take up to several months for a quality dress to be made, so make sure that you’ve left plenty of time for the dressmaker to do his or her work. With patience and time, a custom made gown can be a wonderful addition to your special day.
