The experience of the wedding is equally as important as the trappings and decorations. So don't settle for any old bar band or DJ to get your reception hopping. Interview DJs for your wedding reception and find one that will encourage your guests to have fun.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • references
  • contract
  • music list
Step1
Start with references. Rather than sifting through the hundreds of phone book entries, ask some friends about DJs they recommend.
Step2
Bear witness. Firsthand experience beats word of mouth any day. Find out where the DJ is spinning next and drop by, or look for videos of his work.
Step3
Ask about experience. See how long this DJ has been in the business and how many weddings they have done. Tell them which venue you are in and make sure they are familiar with it. Ask for more references and follow up on them.
Step4
Ask about their collection. See if you can take a look at the CDs they have and ask if they take requests or will play from your collection. Let them know which songs you do NOT want to play and which songs are your favorites.
Step5
Make sure the person you interview is your actual DJ. Some companies will send out neophyte DJs after securing a contract. Be sure that the person you talk to is the same person who will be at your wedding reception.
Step6
Arrange for food and attire for your DJ. Ask if your DJ wants to be fed, and request that he dresses properly.
Step7
Price realistically. Don't skimp on the entertainment--you get what you pay for. But at the same time, beware of hidden fees such as overtime or requests.
Step8
Ask yourself, Do I like this DJ? Bottom line is that you want to get along with anyone you work with. If you are comfortable with them and communicate well, it shouldn't be hard to work out any problems that come up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Interview three to five DJs before deciding.
  • Documents are good. If he shows you a planner, a contract and a song list you can feel confident that he is a professional.
  • Wireless mics are nice for speeches and avoid the tangle and danger of cords.
  • Let your DJ know the itinerary.
  • A good DJ can read the crowd and pick songs that they are going to like.
  • Avoid hiring friends to DJ a wedding, unless they are professional DJs.
  • Don't go for the lowest bidder. Some prices are too good to be true and you might get scammed.
  • Read the contract! It must be clear, concise and let you know who is your DJ and exactly how much you will be charged.
