The DJ or the band is usually the last thing you'll book when planning a wedding, but good entertainment is actually one of the most important parts of a wedding. Many people find themselves with little time and money leftover by the time they consider a DJ or a band, so
make sure you plan ahead so you can find a DJ or a band for your wedding reception without going over your budget.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • references
  • budget
  1. Step 1

Book in advance. Find a DJ or a band that will sign a contract with you months or even a year in advance. You'll not only be guaranteed a great act, but you'll also save money and have some peace of mind.

  2. Step 2

Interview your band or DJ. Some DJs or bands will try to scam you with hidden fees or outrageous overtime. When you talk with them, be sure you ask enough questions so they can't leave anything out.

  3. Step 3

Find out what you need to rent. Some bands and DJs request you provide a sound system for them while others will charge you extra and bring their own. Compare their extra charge to the price of renting or borrowing a PA system on your own.

  4. Step 4

Get it in writing. To avoid any surprises, sit down with your DJ or band and write a contract. Write out the exact payment terms and decide on overtime and other incidental charges.

  5. Step 5

Try to get a discount. If you know someone who knows someone who knows a band you might be able to save a couple bucks. This is also a good way to get recommendations as well.

  6. Step 6

Consider the house band. Some reception halls and venues will include a DJ or a house band in the price of the room rental.

  7. Step 7

Be efficient with your time. Most DJs and bands charge by the hour, so have them show up at a reasonable time and provide them ample time for teardown and setup. For instance, you don't want to charge them to be there during the ceremony or when people are getting
settled. Make sure they will be performing for every minute they are there.

  8. Step 8

Shop around. Interview 3 to 5 bands or DJs before deciding. Let them know you are looking around and tell them if you've found a lower rate.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you book in advance, call every now and then to keep in touch and make sure they haven't forgotten your agreement.
  • Audition every band you interview. Get videos of DJs performances and get references.
  • Don't be afraid to put down a deposit—it's just good business.
  • Don't be overly stingy. Oftentimes you get what you pay for, and having a caterwauling sub-par wedding band ruin your reception isn't worth saving fifty dollars.
  • Make sure your DJ is legit—make sure his music collection is not pirated and he has good references.
