How to Get Married in Wyoming

Wyoming is the least populated state in the union and home to the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park. The intimacy and fidelity of a marriage seem to be built into the very fabric of the cowboy state. It is a place where residents have enjoyed their vows and where many couples choose for a wedding. Here’s how to get married in Wyoming.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • marriage license
  • identification

Step1
Bring a witness that is familiar with the bride and groom to the county clerk’s office to apply for your marriage license.
Step2
Decide on a date for the ceremony. Keep it flexible, though, as this will make it easier to reserve a venue.
Step3
Find and reserve a location for your wedding ceremony. If you’re not set on a particular church, consider some of the natural amphitheaters of the Wyoming wilderness-especially those in Yellowstone National Park.
Step4
Make a guest list and send out the invitations. If you’re pressed for cash, you can do it non-traditionally using an electronic service.
Step5
Plan the particulars of the wedding. Based on the venue, probable weather and likely number of guests, plan the refreshments and entertainment for your reception and ceremony.

Tips & Warnings

  • Marriage licenses in the state of Wyoming do not expire. So, as soon as you’re engaged, you can apply for a marriage license no matter the date of the ceremony.
  • Marriage licenses in Wyoming cost $25, and the fee is to be paid in cash upon application.
  • If a previous marriage has ended in divorce or death, you’ll need to provide documentation to prove that this is so.
  • If you’re under 18, you’ll need a parent or guardian to consent to your marriage, unless you’re under 16 and then only a court order can allow you to be granted a marriage license.
  • Same sex unions are, as of yet, not recognized legally by the state of Wyoming.
