Ohio lies nestled between the Midwest, the East Coast and the Great Lakes region, making for a fine geographical stew of natural beauty and cosmopolitan flavor. There are plenty of reasons--and places--to get married in the Buckeye state. Here's how to get married in Ohio.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Marriage license
  • Identification
Step1
Decide on a location. You’ll need to buy a marriage license in the county in which you decide to be married, so you’ll need to know the county before you apply for a license.
Step2
Decide on a date. The climate and geography of Ohio affords more settings than one might assume. Choose from among lakeside, rural and cosmopolitan settings (see Resources below).
Step3
Acquire a marriage license. In the state of Ohio, you can acquire a marriage license with $40 and a photo ID (plus parental consent if you’re between the ages of 16 and 18) (see Resources below).
Step4
Make up a guest list. Choose your family members first and then invite as many friends as your budget allows.
Step5
Plan the specifics. Do you want a DJ or a live band? What are the colors of your wedding going to be? Line up a photographer, florist and caterer as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Common-law marriages are no longer legal in Ohio.
  • Marriage licenses are valid only for 60 days after they’re issued, so wait until you are 60 days (at the most) away from the ceremony date before you apply.
  • Most county clerk offices will only accept cash for the marriage license fee.
  • Same-sex marriages were banned in the state of Ohio in 2004.
  • Some counties in Ohio charge marriage license application fees of slightly more than $40. Call ahead if you’re unsure.
