The high desert, painted rocks and Southwestern charm of New Mexico make it an ideal place to perform the sacred, romantic ceremony of marriage. New Mexico geography and climate offers a variety of settings that are accessible nearly year round. Here's how to get married in New Mexico.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Marriage license
  • Identification

Step1
Get a marriage license. Go to the county clerk’s office with your fiancé and bring your driver’s license and social security card (see References below). If you’re 24 or older, that’s all you need. If you’re younger, also bring a passport or birth certificate.
Step2
Choose your wedding attire. Traditional white dresses and tuxedos are fairly easy to come by, but if you are going to opt for an unusual dress or designer couture, allow for more time and plan to spend more money.
Step3
Find a location. Chapels are the obvious choice for the vast majority of couples, but if you want a unique setting (or are looking to save some money), consider having your wedding at home or at an outdoor location.
Step4
Make your guest list. Invite family and close friends and then add more guests if you want and if you have the financial means to do so.
Step5
Plan the ceremony and reception. Choose colors and attire for the wedding party and book any professionals you will need such as the officiant and a caterer, photographer, videographer, florist, makeup artist, hairstylist, DJ and band (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on the county you get married in, the fee for a marriage license can be anywhere between $25 and $40.
  • You can apply for a license up to a year before the ceremony. The license is no longer valid one year after it’s issued.
  • You’ll need at least two witnesses at your wedding and an ordained member of the clergy.
