Colorado sits on the spine of the North American continent, and the surrounding landscape is suitably stimulating. Colorado has some striking alpine features and the options to give you and your fiancé the wedding of your dreams. So, here’s how to get married in Colorado.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Marriage license
  • Identification
Step1
Get a Colorado marriage license. It’s easy to do. Go to the county clerk’s office and bring your partner, a driver’s license, and your social security card (see References below).
Step2
Decide on a date. Be flexible in deciding on a date. Start with a month or a week and then see what locations are available and how it suits your friends and family.
Step3
Decide on a place. Take your time as there are plenty of striking venues in this striking state. Wait for a place that speaks to both of you. From the beauty of the mountains to the sparkling nightlife of Denver, Colorado has a wedding venue to suit just about any taste (see Resources below).
Step4
Decide who will perform the ceremony. This person is called the officiate and can be a judge, a clergy member, or the county clerk herself.
Step5
Decide who is invited. The guest list can be tedious. Most people have trouble striking a balance between inviting everybody they want to and paying for all those people. Be patient.
Step6
Decide what to do next. One of the best parts about planning a wedding, is planning what comes after it--the honeymoon.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is no waiting period in Colorado for your marriage license to become valid. In addition, it expires 30 days after it is issued. So, wait until your wedding day is right on the horizon to apply.
  • The state of Colorado allows couples, if they wish, to perform the duty of the officiate themselves and solemnize their own marriage at the county clerk’s office.
  • Marrying your cousin in the state of Colorado is legal, however same-sex marriages are not.
  • Those sixteen or seventeen years old may marry in the state of Colorado, but will need the consent of a parent or guardian in person with them when they apply for their marriage license.
