Making sure that you have met all of the necessary legal requirements for your wedding day is very important. Here's how to apply for a marriage license in Vermont.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Identification
  • Cash
Step1
Apply at the town clerk's office in your city for a license that is valid anywhere in the state if you are a Vermont resident (see Resources below). If you are from outside the state, you may get your license from any city clerk's office. You'll need to pay $20 in cash.
Step2
Be ready to provide identification. You will be asked to show a valid picture ID and birth certificate and give your age, your current place of residence, your parents' names, mother’s maiden name and your parents' places of birth.
Step3
Be prepared to answer questions about your race, your highest level of education and about any previous marriages one or both of you may have had. No blood test or physical exam is needed. Both partners will need to be present.
Step4
Wait for at least 24 hours after you receive the marriage license before having the ceremony as required by law. However, you will receive your marriage license immediately after you apply for it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can marry without parental consent if you are over 18. Parental consent or a court order is required for anyone younger than 18.
  • A marriage license is valid for 60 days, so plan your ceremony date accordingly.
  • Select a religious or civial officiant to perform the ceremony. Local officials, however, can only perform ceremonies within their jurisdictions.
  • Marrying your cousin is permitted in Vermont, but same-sex marriages are not.
  • Getting married by proxy is not permitted in Vermont.
