California, the Golden State, is symbolic of the West Coast. It has an incredible array of scenic and historic destinations. This (among other things) makes it extremely attractive to people looking to get married. If you’re one of these couples, here’s how to get married in California.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Marriage license
  • Identification

Step1
Set a date. Be flexible because it will give you more room to maneuver when you are planning your location.
Step2
Find a place for the ceremony and reception. California has no shortage of venues for gorgeous weddings, but because it's a popular place to get married, venues can book up months, if not years, in advance.
Step3
Choose an officiant. In California, pastors, ministers, judges and county clerks can perform your wedding ceremony.
Step4
Make a guest list and send the invitations with an RSVP required.
Step5
It will cost $45 or more to get a marriage license in California and typically must be paid in cash (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Same-sex marriages are not allowed in California. However, in Marin and San Francisco Counties, same-sex couples may apply for a domestic partnership.
  • Get a confidential marriage. California offers this service for those who want to live together as husband and wife but who do not want a public record of their marriage.
  • Marriage licenses are valid for only 90 days after they are issued in the state of California. Don’t go to the county clerk’s office too early.
  • You must apply for a marriage license in the county in which you plan to get married. You do not, however, have to be a resident of that county or even of California.
