Your marriage is a wonderful occasion to celebrate. Making sure that you have met all of the necessary legal requirements for your special day is important. Here's how to apply for a marriage license in Utah.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Identification
  • Cash
Step1
Plan a date for your ceremony and then contact a religious or civil officiant to perform your ceremony.
Step2
Find out where the county clerk's office is located by searching online or referring to a phone directory (see Resources below). Apply for your marriage license in person at the office.
Step3
Be prepared to pay up to $50 for the marriage license, although some counties do not charge a fee. You do not need to be a resident of Utah to apply.
Step4
Have identification showing that you are at least 18 years old, or have your parents present if one partner (or both) is 16 or 17. You will need to provide your full names, your social security numbers, your parents' full names and their birthplace information and your complete residence information. The parents or guardians of a 15-year-old wishing to marry will need to make a formal Petition for Authorization to Marry and appear before a juvenile judge.
Step5
There is no delay between the time that you apply and when you get the license, nor is any waiting time necessary between getting the license and holding the ceremony.

Tips & Warnings

  • Blood tests are not required in Utah for obtaining a marriage license.
  • Bring the necessary papers with you if you have divorced within the last six months. You will need to prove that your divorce was finalized.
  • A marriage license is valid for 30 days only, so be sure to know when you plan on getting married before you apply for the license.
  • Cousins may marry in Utah if both partners are 55 or older and can prove that no possibility of pregnancy exists. If you are older than 65, no consent is necessary. Same-sex marriages are not allowed, nor are marriages by proxy (in most counties) or by covenant.
