How to Make a Mai Tai

When Trader Vic of the Polynesian-inspired restaurant chain first invented his signature drink and gave it to a Tahitian friend to try, the man took one sip and yelled, "Maita'i roa!" which translates to "Very good!" Enjoy this "very good" drink by following these steps to make a Mai Tai:

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 oz. lime juice
  • 1 oz. orange juice
  • 1 oz. lemon juice
  • 2 oz. pineapple juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. dark rum
  • 11/2 oz. light rum
  • 1 oz. orange liqueur
  • Pineapple wedge
  • Lemon juice
  • Lime juice
  • Pineapple juice
  • Glassware
  • Orange liqueur
  • Dark rum
  • Pineapple wedge
  • Light rum
  • Ice
  • Orange juice
Step1
Scoop ice into a martini shaker until it is half-full.
Step2
Pour in the liquor and juice and replace the lid.
Step3
Shake until the outside of the shaker becomes frosted with condensation.
Step4
Strain the contents of the shaker into a tall, 16-oz. glass filled with ice.
Step5
Garnish with a pineapple wedge and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings

  • For an even better-tasting Mai Tai, substitute the pre-made juices with the fresh juice of one orange, half a lemon and half a lime.
  • Don't drink and drive.

on 7/3/2007 For those who don't like the taste of alcohol, replacing the dark rum with a light malibu rum hides the alcohol taste while adding extra flavor. And you'll still get the same porportions.
