Crochet is a fun and relaxing way of passing the time—you can do it while watching TV or listening to music and you’ll end up with something pretty that you’ve made yourself, too! Learning how to crochet is quite easy, and once you’ve mastered these instructions you can use the crochet blocks to make a variety of things such as scarves, bags, blankets and cushion covers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Worsted-weight yarn
  • Yarn needle with a large eye
  • Size G crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Hold the crochet hook in whichever hand is most comfortable.

  2. Step 2

Make a slip knot on the hook with your yarn.

  3. Step 3

Bring the yarn over the hook from the back to the front then grab it with the hook.

  4. Step 4

Draw the hooked yarn through the slip knot and onto the hook. This is one chain stitch.

  5. Step 5

Repeat steps three and four until the crochet length is as long as you want it.

  6. Step 6

Insert the hook into the center of the second chain stitch (the second closest to the hook).

  7. Step 7

Draw the yarn through the chain stitch and onto the hook. There will be two loops on the hook.

  8. Step 8

Bring the yarn over the hook from the back to the front then draw it through both of the loops on the hook. This is one crochet stitch.

  9. Step 9

Repeat steps seven and eight for each of the remaining chains. Once you have finished, this is one row of crochet.

  10. Step 10

Make one chain stitch at the end of the row, then turn your work counter-clockwise. Leave the hook in the chain.

  11. Step 11

Make a new row and work in the stitches of the row you just created.

  12. Step 12

Continue until the block is as big as you want it.

  13. Step 13

Cut the yarn around six inches from the block when you have finished.

  14. Step 14

Draw the hook through the last loop on the hook, then detach the hook.

  15. Step 15

Thread yarn into your yarn needle, then weave the yarn back and forth through the stitches to keep the end secure.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with different yarn weights and hook sizes to get different crochet effects.
  • If you find it difficult to get a good grip on a crochet hook, wrap a rubber band around the handle.
