Part of what makes Slashdot so popular is subscribers' ability to post in discussions. Users can comment on stories they read, converse and debate with other people, contribute to Slashdot's vibrant community and make new friends...or enemies.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Slashdot account
  • Computer with Internet access

Make Yourself Heard: Post in Slashdot Discussions

Step1
Bring up the Slashdot homepage on your Web browser (see Resources below). Log in to your Slashdot account by entering your username and password.
Step2
Find a story that interests you by navigating the "Sections" menu and perusing the postings. Recently posted news stories are also fair game for discussion, and you can access them from the Slashdot home page.
Step3
Read replies posted by other users by clicking the links to discussion threads which appear beneath the original story.
Step4
Click the "Reply To This" link to get started creating your response to a story or discussion thread.
Step5
Type the subject of your response in the Subject field of the "Reply To" screen. If you choose to leave this blank, the system will default to the standard phrase, "Re: [original article or thread title]."
Step6
Enter the body of your response in the "Comment" field. You can also type your response into a word processor to double-check for spelling and grammar errors before pasting it in.
Step7
Check the box beside the Post Anonymously option if you wish to remain anonymous.
Step8
Take your pick of plain text, HTML, extrans or code from the drop-down menu.
Step9
Click "Preview" to double-check your discussion thread before posting it.
Step10
Click "Submit" when you're ready to post your discussion thread.
Step11
Get help, if you need it, from Slashdot's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure you're responding to the proper posting. If you've navigated away from the main story or discussion thread by reading replies posted by other users, click "Parent" to return to where you began.
  • Check to see that your proper username appears in the Name section of the "Reply To" screen if more than one Slashdot account is attached to your computer.
  • Stay on topic. Slashdot postings are subject to editorial review and your postings may be edited or deleted if they're off-topic, hurtful or offensive.
  • Protect your privacy: Double-check that your preferences are set to include only the information you want other users to see. Your specified preferences are automatically applied to any postings you make in the discussion boards.
