You can customize a multitude of personal account settings by accessing the Preferences menu from your Slashdot account's homepage. You can choose to share the URL of your personal Web site, swap AIM or Yahoo! screen names with other users, change your password, remove banner ads from pages and much, much more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Active Slashdot account
  • Computer with Internet access

    Customize Your Slashdot Preferences

  1. Step 1

Start by going to Slashdot's homepage and logging in to your account (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Click the link to your account's Preferences menu.

  3. Step 3

Edit your user preferences by clicking the "User" link in the Preferences submenu.

  4. Step 4

Click the "Save User" button when you've finished. Your user preferences have now been saved and updated, regardless of whether or you go on to modify the rest of your preferences in the same session.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for your homepage preferences, accessed by clicking the "Homepage" link in the Preferences submenu. In this step, you will have the option to save your changes, "Restore Defaults" or "Restore Default Slashboxes." Choose "Save" to save your personal homepage preferences.

  6. Step 6

Continue to the "Comments" link in the Preferences submenu and select your preferred settings. Click "Save" to save your work, or "Restore Default" to bring back the default settings and start again.

  7. Step 7

Access your personal message preferences via the "Messages" link in the Preferences submenu. Choose your settings and click "Save Prefs."

  8. Step 8

Go to the "Journal" link in the Preferences submenu. Enter the settings you want and select "Change." Changes are now saved.

  9. Step 9

Alter your miscellaneous options by accessing the "Misc" link in the Preferences submenu, turning the OSTG Navbar on or off and clicking "Save."

  10. Step 10

Buy ad-free pages for yourself or other users from the "Subscribe" option in the Preferences submenu. Skip this step if you'd rather view pages with banner ads than pay to have them removed.

  11. Step 11

Change your password and session settings by clicking the "Password" link in the Preferences submenu. Click "Change Login Prefs" to save the changes you made.

  12. Step 12

Choose to show or hide tags by selection on or off from the "Show Tags" field in the Tags page, accessed through the Preferences submenu. Click "Save" when done. You've now finished saving your personal preferences on Slashdot!

  13. Step 13

Refer to Slashdot's extensive FAQ (Frequently-Asked Questions) page if you need more specific information about any of the Preferences settings (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Defend yourself against possible compromises to account's privacy. Always log out when you finish a Slashdot session, and never save your username or password information on a shared or public computer.
