To enjoy the tech news, current events postings and discussion forums offered by Slashdot's community of users and editors, the first thing you'll need to do is create an account so you can log in. From there, you'll be able to browse the news topics and participate in the interactive forums that rocketed Slashdot to its enormous popularity.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Email account
  • Computer with an Internet connection
  • Web browsing software

Create Your Slashdot Account

Step1
Go to Slashdot's homepage using your Web browser (see Resources below).
Step2
Click on the "Create Account" link. This will bring you to a new page with fields to enter your account information.
Step3
Select a nickname. This will function as both the username attached to your account and the name other users will see if you choose to post in the discussion forums.
Step4
Type your email address into the designated field. You will need to verify it.
Step5
Check the boxes corresponding to your desired email alert preferences. You can decide whether or not replies to comments you post will be sent directly to your email, as well as whether or not you'll automatically receive Slashdot's newsletter and daily headlines.
Step6
Use the provided drop-down menu to select your time zone.
Step7
Enter the word shown in the image field in the space beside it. Slashdot includes this step to diminish the likelihood of spam generated by automatic registrations created by script-running programs.
Step8
Point and click on the "Create Account" button when you've finished entering your personal information. Slashdot will then randomly generate a password which will be sent to the email address you provided in Step 4.

Tips & Warnings

  • Personalize your nickname, bearing in mind the list of acceptable characters provided by Slashdot on the registration page.
  • Sign up for a new email account with one of the Web's many free providers to guard your primary email against possible spam. Your new email account can be used anytime you wish to join a Web site requiring a subscription.
  • Browse through the help topics listed on Slashdot's FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page (see Resources below). Many basic questions about Slashdot accounts and subscriptions are answered there, and a Slashdot account is not required to access the FAQ section.
  • Protect your privacy. Create personalized passwords other people won't be able to guess, and do not use the same password you use to access your email.
