1. Contact the lodge at Alpine Valley Resort at 800-227-9395 to check room rates and availability or visit their Web site (see Resources below). You can also find the latest deals and specials online.

2. Explore your options in rental cottages in East Troy. Book during the peak season and expect moderate per night prices for double occupancy rooms.

Find Directions to Alpine Valley Ski Resort

1. Travel west on I-94 from Chicago, and take the WI Hwy 20 exit. Travel west to Hwy D and travel 1/2 mile from the intersection of Hwy 120 and Hwy D.

2. Take I-43 south from Milwaukee to the Bowers Road exit. Travel south to Hwy D for 1/4 mile, then turn left on Hwy D and travel 1 mile to Alpine Valley.

3. Take I-55 north from St. Louis to IL Hwy 47. Travel north until WI Hwy 47 becomes Hwy 120. Continue on Hwy 120 to Hwy D, turn left and travel 1/2 mile to Alpine Valley Resort.

1. Check the Alpine Valley Resort Web site for the current ski report (see Resources below). Check the extended forecast for Elkhorn, Wisconsin if you plan on staying for several days.

2. Bring along enough money for chairlift tickets. Keep in mind a full day pass, from open to close, are most expensive on weekends, but prices are still quite reasonable.

3. Review a map of the trails to see if there are enough beginner, intermediate and black diamond runs to match the skill levels of the people in your ski party. Keep in mind a combined 80 percent of the trails are best suited for beginner and intermediate skiers, 20 percent are advanced and all runs are snowboard accessible.

4. Check the operating hours for this Wisconsin ski resort. Keep in mind Alpine Valley offers night skiing, and the ski season usually runs from December through March.
