Located in Bergen County, New Jersey, 18 miles north of the George Washington Bridge, Campgaw Mountain is a very popular destination for a ski trip, as it is the closest ski destination to New York City. A beginner/intermediate ski area with a 269-foot vertical drop, Campgaw Mountain offers skiing, snowboarding and tubing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Book Lodging and Choose Transportation

Step1
Find a comprehensive list of area accommodations on the New Jersey Travel and Tourism Web site (see Resources below). You can't book online, but the search feature is still quite helpful. The office doesn't list a phone number, but you can contact a tourism representative through the Web site's online form if you need assistance.
Step2
Book accommodations at a resort and spa just outside of the town of Mahwah, where Campgaw Mountain is located, for a luxurious and relaxing experience. After a long day on the slopes, enjoy top-notch amenities and service at one of these excellent locations. Expect to pay a relatively high price for a superior room.
Step3
Travel to Mahwah, New Jersey easily by car from New York City, southern New York State and northern New Jersey. Those arriving from out of state can fly into New York's JFK or LaGuardia International Airports or New Jersey's Newark International Airport.

Get Familiar with Campgaw Mountain

Step1
Enjoy your first taste of skiing or snowboarding at Campgaw Mountain, a tamer-than-many ski area that caters to beginners. With gentle slopes and a great variety of classes offered at the Campgaw Ski and Snowboard Learning Center, Campgaw Mountain is an excellent place for a first ski trip.
Step2
Take your family tubing, which is one of the specialties at Campgaw Mountain. Fly down the chutes on a snow tube specially made for speed and maximum slide. Snow tubing is fun for adults and kids, and Campgaw Mountain offers 2-hour sessions from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends, as well as a more limited schedule on weekdays.

Prepare for Your Ski Trip

Step1
BYO or rent: you'll find a rental shop on Campgaw Mountain which rents boots, skis, snowboards and even helmets.
Step2
Purchase your lift ticket, area pass and lessons (leaving time to fill out all necessary forms) at either the Campgaw Mountain Main Lodge or the Rental Shop. You can print and fill out forms from the Internet to expedite the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • The New Jersey Travel and Tourism Web site does not offer online accommodations booking.
  • Before you take off for your trip, don't forget to check out a current snow report at onthesnow.com (see Resources below).
  • Keep your lift ticket attached to your jacket all day, or you may have problems getting around Campgaw Mountain.
  • Make sure to check for specific closures and changes in the regular schedule at Campgaw Mountain, all of which are listed on the official Web site.
