How to Go Skiing in Marshall Mountain, Montana

Marshall Mountain is a great ski area only minutes from Downtown Missoula, Montana and the University of Montana campus. Located on Marshall Canyon Road, it has terrain for all levels of skiers.

    Book Accommodations and Travel

  1. Step 1

    Check out Montana's Official State Travel Information Web site (see Resources below) for lodging options near Marshall Mountain. The site links to an online booking system for your convenience. If you need assistance, contact the Tourism Office at 1-800-VISIT-MT.

  2. Step 2

    Stay close to the Marshall Mountain ski area. There are many familiar chain hotels located in Downtown Missoula that are within a 10-minute drive to Marshall. Prices will vary by the type of hotel that you select, but you shouldn't have any trouble fining budget-friendly accommodations.

  3. Step 3

    Look for accommodations in East Missoula if you want to book a very inexpensive room.

  4. Step 4

    Arrive by land or air. You can either drive to Marshall Mountain or land at the Missoula International Airport (MSO). This airport offers several direct flights from both in-state locations and cities such as Seattle, Denver and Salt Lake City.

    Rent a car to get around town. There are 5 car rental companies within 10 miles of the airport including.

    Learn about lift tickets. At Marshall Mountain, Montana you can buy a full day, hourly, night or midnight madness lift ticket. Prices are typically quite reasonable.

    Bring your own equipment if possible. However, while rental equipment isn't always available at the mountain, there are ski equipment and sporting good rental companies in the nearby city of Missoula.

    Arrange for ski lessons. Private lessons are available at Marshall Mountain through local ski teachers.

    Scan the terrain. Marshall Mountain lures skiers with over 480 acres of winter wonderland. It offers about 1,500 vertical feet of ski slopes and 24 different runs.

    Paint yourself a picture of the Marshall Mountain Ski Resort. At the Marshall Mountain Ski Area you will find alpine skiing and snowboarding, night skiing and half-pipe opportunities.

    Know the mountain's stats. Marshall Mountain has a base elevation of 3,900 feet, a summit elevation of 5,400 feet, an annual snowfall of 150 inches a longest run is 13,200 feet and an uphill lift capacity of 2,900 per hour.

    Learn about this ski area's regular season. Marshall Mountain is open from the middle of December to the middle of March. The hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. through 9:30 p.m with night skiing from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Tips & Warnings
  • Expect to spend a bit of time in the car. The city is spread out over a large area and it will take you about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the traffic and the weather, to make the trip between the airport and the ski area.
  • Don't forget to check up on the ski conditions at Marshall Mountain prior to your trip (see Resources below).
  • Book accommodations online to profit from any Internet-only room rates.
  • Marshall Mountain does not currently have a Web site.
  • Marshall Mountain was closed during the 2004 ski season. Check to make sure it's up and running before planning your trip.
