Things You'll Need:
- Internet access to book reservations online
- Major credit card
- Phone
-
Step 1
Call the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau at (906) 337-4579 for a listing of accommodations in Hancock, or visit its Web site (see Resource below). The Bureau maintains a list of motels in the region.
-
Step 2
Make a reservation in one of the area's inexpensive chain hotels, or splurge on a ski-in/ski-out chalet with luxurious amenities and its own sauna.
-
Step 3
Call ahead for Mont Ripley tickets. The ski resort is operated by Michigan Tech, and tickets to use the facilities can be booked by calling the college at (906) 487-2340.
-
Step 4
Use a travel agent to book your accommodations for a worry-free trip. Ask for any available special promotions or group rates.
-
Step 1
Fly into the Houghton County Memorial Airport. There is limited commercial service from Northwest Airlines, or you can charter a plane. There are no shuttles to local hotels, so make sure you have a rental car reserved ahead of time.
-
Step 2
Drive through pristine wilderness to reach accommodations near Mont Ripley. Contact your hotel for updated road conditions and to confirm your reservation before you go.
-
Step 3
Prepare for thrills. With a 420-foot vertical drop, half pipe and terrain park, Mont Ripley can provide a challenge. There are 24 trails, 2 of which are rated for experts only.
-
Step 4
Pack clothing designed to take the rigors of skiing, because the winter temperatures can be brutal this far up in Michigan. Quality ski gloves, goggles and ear protection are all required.
-
Step 5
Rent skis and safety equipment on-site to cut down on the car-top luggage. Your room will feel a lot larger if you're not sharing it with skis and poles. Qualified local ski instructors will make sure you have what you need.
-
Step 6
Check ahead on the ski and road conditions at Mont Ripley. You can easily find this information by visiting the Michigan Ski Report and Snow Conditions Web site (see Resources below) or by calling 1-800-944-SNOW.
