How to Go Skiing in Sugarloaf, Maine

Sugarloaf is an enormous skiing and snowboarding playground near Kingfield, Maine in the Carrabassett Valley. It is the second highest peak in Maine. It has 1,400 acres of skiing, 133 trails and glades and 15 lifts. A selection of terrain parks for snowboarders and freestyle skiers features an Olympic-quality Superpipe. It has the only lifts above the treeline in the East.

    Plan Your Ski Trip to Sugarloaf

  1. Step 1

    Stay the night or longer at one Sugarloaf's on-site lodging options. You can book directly on the Sugarloaf Web site (see Resources below). You can also call (800) THE-LOAF to book your accommodations.

  2. Step 2

    Experience world-class service at the Grand Summit Resort Hotel. This is the most expensive lodging choice at Sugarloaf.

  3. Step 3

    Rent an on-site condo for an inexpensive rate that includes lift tickets. These feature ski-in and ski-out access to the slopes at Sugarloaf.

  4. Step 4

    Save some money and book a room at the Sugarloaf Inn. This is the cheapest on-site lodging option, but guests will appreciate the stellar brews at the inn's restaurant and pub.

  5. Step 5

    Drive from Portland, Maine, Bangor, Maine, New Hampshire or Boston. Take I-95 to Augusta, then take exit 112B. Follow Route 27 North.

  6. Enjoy Your Ski Trip to Sugarloaf

  7. Step 1

    Blast down the hill on a tube, with four 1000-foot chutes to choose from. The tubing hill has its own lift so you can slide right back up the hill.

  8. Step 2

    Enjoy the Sports and Fitness Center. Work out, play racquetball, swim in the indoor pool, get a massage or a manicure. Who needs skiing?

  9. Step 3

    Get out your credit card and buy or rent anything you need for skiing at the Retail and Rental shop. They also have snowboarding equipment, snowshoes and ice skates.

  10. Step 4

    Be brave and learn to ski or snowboard. Sugarloaf's Ski School will turn you into a snow pro in no time.

  11. Step 5

    Take the kids with you. Leave the smallest ones in the day care center at Sugarloaf, and if they are three or older, sign them up for ski lessons.

  • Look for a current snow and ski report online (see Resources below).
  • Winter weather in Maine is unpredictable. Bring survival supplies, like extra food and water, warm clothing and a first aid kit to keep in the car.
