Things You'll Need:

Book Your Train Travel from China to Hong Kong

  1. Step 1

Book affordable tickets from locations in China to Hong Kong by visiting China-Train-Ticket.com (see Resources below), or by calling 011 (+86) 10 65 26 67 21.

  2. Step 2

Stop at the foreigner ticket office for departures from major cities. This is the easiest way to book train travel from within China to Hong Kong.

  3. Step 3

Utilize the services your hotel offers. Most hotels will be able to arrange tickets on your behalf as part of their services. This will take the stress of booking tickets off you and allow you to enjoy your trip more.

  4. Step 4

Purchase tickets at the ticket office at the station. Reservations open anywhere from 2 to 20 days before departure. You'll want to buy your tickets as soon as reservations open, especially if you're wanting a berth.

  5. Choose the Best Accommodations

  6. Step 1

Decide in advance what level of comfort and convenience you require. Your trip will most likely be a long one; so prepare in accordance.

  7. Step 2

Ride the "Z" category trains. "Z" category trains are the top-of-the-line long distance trains in China. They're clean, air conditioned, comfortable, have dining options and sometimes even a bar.

  8. Step 3

Pick a compartment. Hard sleeper compartments are sparse and open. They sleep 6 people in close quarters. Soft sleepers are more open and sleep 4 people. Deluxe soft sleepers are the most comfortable, with only 2 bunks. They're rather elegant.

  9. Step 4

Consider making reservations in the dining car if you're not bringing your own food. Restaurants onboard "Z" category trains are quite good and offer a wide range of food choices.

  10. Arrange Transportation from the Hong Kong Station

  11. Step 1

Locate the rental car counter at the station if you've previously arranged to rent a car at the Hong Kong train station.

  12. Step 2

Hail a taxi at the station to take you to your destination. Fares are reasonable and taxi cabs are usually plentiful.

  13. Step 3

Have someone pick you up at the station. If you know someone in Hong Kong, this is your best option. It will save you the trouble of finding your way around or catching a cab.

Tips & Warnings
  • Reserve tickets online. Purchasing tickets online is safe and easy. It will cost slightly more than buying at the ticket office, but you will have peace of mind knowing that your ticket is already booked. Tickets will be delivered to your hotel in China. They will not be mailed abroad.
  • Don't forget to book your train travel from China to Hong Kong early due to the sheer number of passengers who ride this line. This is especially crucial during the Spring Festival and near the first of May and October.
