Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access to book travel

Book Your Rail Plan

Step1
Book your ticket online at the Rail Europe Web site (see Resources below). You can also call 888-382-RAIL to reserve seats. Expect prices to be moderate for this route.
Step2
Take advantage of a Eurail Spain Pass if your travels remain strictly within Spanish borders.
Step3
Explore Spain and neighboring countries at a discount by choosing a Eurail Select Pass. This pass will also include travel to Italy.
Step4
Maximize your budget and make traveling easy by choosing a Eurail Global Pass. With it, you'll have access to over 15 countries via the Eurail system.

Select Your Train Accommodations

Step1
Choose the single daytime or single nighttime run that's available when you book train travel from Madrid to Vigo.
Step2
Select tourist accommodations for maximum savings.
Step3
Upgrade to first-class accommodations for a more comfortable ride. You'll also have better storage for your luggage.
Step4
Receive discounted parking with the purchase of a first-class, one-way or round-trip ticket.
Step5
Enjoy a cafeteria-type meal service with your second-class or first-class tickets.
Step6
Unwind with a more formal lunch service available for an extra fee with the purchase of a first-class ticket.

Book Sleeper Accommodations

Step1
Save money by purchasing a seat at the tourist price. Forgo formal sleeper accommodations on your way out of Madrid.
Step2
Utilize the tourist class option of a four-berth cabin to maximize savings while still sleeping in a comfortable bed with mattress, blanket and pillow.
Step3
Upgrade to a first-class "Preferente" ticket and select from a 1- or 2-person sleeper cabin. These accommodations include an in-cabin wash basin and telephone, use of the train station's VIP Lounge area and a complimentary breakfast.
Step4
Treat yourself to a first-class "Gran Clase" ticket and receive all the amenities of a "Preferente" ticket with the addition of a complimentary dinner, drink and newspaper. You'll also have private, in-cabin toilet facilities and shower.

Tips & Warnings

  • Book online to avoid long lines and sold-out accommodations.
  • Use of the dining car is not restricted to "Gran Clase" passengers holding a meal voucher. Others simply pay for their meal.
  • Look into one-way and round-trip point-to-point tickets even if you have a rail plan. Minimal fees for minor distances can preserve a rail plan day for more expensive ventures.
  • You must be under age 26 to use any Eurail Youth Pass plans.
  • You must have a reservation to book a sleeper car.
