Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Passport

Choose Luxury Accommodations

Step1
Find both contemporary and traditional lodgings in the city of Djerba. Luxury accommodations include menzels, traditional local bungalows.
Step2
Choose any of the luxury hotels in Gammarth and enjoy a summer barbecue poolside.
Step3
Find a nice selection of luxury hotels in Hammamet. Most of them are located near the beach and are well-equipped with luxurious amenities.
Step4
Reserve accommodations in any of the stately hotels in Kairouan. Expect beautifully furnished rooms as well as amenities for the business traveler.
Step5
Select a hotel in Port El Kantaoui. Luxury hotel offerings range from tennis courts to a children's club.
Step6
Look for luxury accommodations in the town of Sidi Bou Said where the pretty houses are all white with blue doors and window shutters. Resorts and hotels just outside of town charge far less than the traditional hotels located within the city limits.
Step7
Plan a trip to the cities of Djerba and Douz if you are interested in typical tourist towns with tourist trappings.
Step8
Book a room in Tunis. See archaeological sites and the Bardo Museum, which has the second largest collection of Roman murals. Look for luxury hotels near the Medina.
Step9
Revel in luxury accommodations at the Abou Nawas Hotel in Tunis. Reserve a room at this five-star hotel by calling 011 (+216) 71 350 355 or visit the official hotel Web site. See the Resources section below for a link.
Step10
Find that luxury accommodations in Tunisia range from inexpensive to expensive, depending on the location and popularity of the hotel. You do generally get more bang for your buck when traveling in Tunisia.

Prepare for Your Hotel Stay

Step1
Inquire about visa regulations at your local embassy. American and European Union citizens do not need visas, Australians can pick one up on arrival at the airport and New Zealanders must get a visa in advance.
Step2
Arrive by ferry or by plane. Take a regular flight to Carthage International Airport near Tunis or take a chartered plane to Monastair.
Step3
Explore the cities of Tunisia by train or taxi. A shared taxi, called a louage, is inexpensive and the fares are fixed. The louage usually takes eight passengers at a time from the station.

Know Your Destination

Step1
Learn Arabic or French. These are the languages in wide use throughout Tunisia.
Step2
Change your currency. Tunisia uses the Dinar.
Step3
Drink responsibly. Alcohol is a restricted drink found only in licensed establishments.
Step4
See the cave dwellings in the village of Matmata. This village became famous because Star Wars was filmed here.

Tips & Warnings

  • While there is a Web site hosted by the Tunisian National Tourism Office, it does not offer users the ability to book accommodations online.
  • To save money, buy a train pass which you can use for a week within cities.
  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00."
  • All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
  • Store your belongings in a safe place, possibly the hotel safe. Theft of belongings from hotel rooms is not uncommon.
  • Female travelers would do well to be accompanied by a male when touring the city. Unaccompanied women are usually harassed by the local men.
