How to Make a Hurricane

In the 1940s, New Orleans bar-owner Pat O’Brien invented the Hurricane when he had to rid his coffers of extra rum. He combined the rum with sweet passion fruit juice, poured it in a hurricane-lamp shaped glass and gave it away to people on the street. Years later, this drink is hugely popular in New Orleans and throughout the country. Read on to learn how to make a Hurricane.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 oz. light rum
  • 1 oz. dark rum
  • 1 tbsp. passion fruit syrup
  • 2 tsp. lime juice
  • Ice
  • Slice of orange
  • 1 oz. dark rum
  • Slice of orange
  • 1 tbsp. passion fruit syrup
  • 1 oz. light rum
  • Shaker
  • Ice
  • Hurricane-lamp shaped glass
  • 2 tsp. lime juice
Step1
Put a scoop of ice into a martini shaker.
Step2
Pour all ingredients into the shaker, replace the shaker lid and shake for ten seconds.
Step3
Fill a hurricane-lamp shaped glass or a tall cocktail glass with ice.
Step4
Strain the contents of the shaker into the glass.
Step5
Garnish with the orange or other fruit.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a great drink for parties or other gatherings. You can make a large batch beforehand.
  • Fancy straws, beads or umbrellas also make a nice garnish.
  • Don't drink and drive.
