How to find the right hairstyle for your face

A good hairstyle flatters the face, building the confidence of the wearer. Picking the wrong hairstyle can do just the opposite. The key to finding the right hairstyle is to identify the shape of your face, which may change with age and weight fluctuations. Examine your face carefully before making major hairstyle changes.

1. Look in a mirror. If your forehead and jaw are the same width you you have an oval shape. Almost every hairstyle flatters an oval-shaped face.

2. Visually inspect your face. If it appears circular and has equal length and width, you have a round shape. Wear hair lifted from the top of the head to create the look of height. Poofy bangs or clipping hair at the crown can create this illusion. A short, sassy hairstyle works well with a round face.

3. Touch the outline of your face. If you have a square jaw and forehead, your face is square-shaped. Square faces are flattered by side-swept bangs and angled hair cuts.

4. Visually follow the outline of your face. If it is wide at the forehead but narrows to a point at the chin, it is heart shaped. Wear textured hairstyles to soften your angled chin.

5. Touch the top and bottom of your face. If it is narrow at the top but widens at the bottom, your face is triangular. Widen a narrow forehead with chopped bangs and a short cut.

6. Look at the center of your face. If your forehead and chin are narrower then the middle area, you have a diamond-shaped face. A short bob or shoulder-length cut with bangs will balance your look.

7. Turn your face slightly to the side. If it is longer than it is wide, you have an oblong-shaped face. Wear straight bangs or side parts and try medium-length hair.
