Are you interested in security for your car? You may wish to install a car alarm to ensure maximum safety in your automobile. These simple steps will show you how to install a car alarm in no time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Car alarm
  • Tools
Step1
Prepare your car and the unit you wish to install. Grab any diagrams of wiring or schematics you have handy and anything the manual calls for such as screws or a soldering iron. Remember that every car alarm may vary slightly in the way it is installed. Make sure to pay close attention to the manual.
Step2
Remove all components of the alarm from its package and remove any panels of the car that are required to access the wiring. Consult your manual for specifications.
Step3
Select a location for the siren and mount it. A common location would be somewhere such as the underside of the front hood.
Step4
Move to the inside of the car again and find a suitable place to mount the alarm module. The best place for this is somewhere that is accessible but out of sight.
Step5
Run the valet switch as directed by the alarm manual. It may be helpful at this time to contact a technical support representative to help you with any wiring the manual calls for in relation to the valet switch.
Step6
Plug any and all wires or components into the alarm unit and run the wiring for the external antenna. Also run the LED light at this time. Again, a tech support representative may be able to assist you.
Step7
Connect the alarm power wire directly to your car battery. You will need to run a fuse as well. Consult the manual for specific unit specifications.
Step8
Run the wiring from your door’s lock mechanisms to the alarm unit. This may take a few minutes and your manual will be a wonderful tool.
Step9
Consult the manual for any shock detection or current sensing installations and complete them in relation to your specific unit. Not every car alarm will have these features.
Step10
Run the wiring for the alarm starter disabling component.
Step11
Make sure everything is plugged in and that there all specific unit features are installed. Test the power to make sure the alarm works properly. This should complete the installation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the manual before making any wiring changes in your car. Be certain that you are looking at the correct wires.
  • Leave no wires uncovered or unattached to prevent accidents.
  • In many car alarm units, if one part is disconnected the entire system fails. If you are having trouble double check that everything is plugged in snugly.
