How to Change the Resolution Settings in Vista for Your Monitor

You can change the resolution settings in Vista for your monitor in order to optimize your desktop space. Higher resolutions allow you to fit more items on your screen while lower resolutions make items larger and easier to see. Changing your resolution settings is the same for Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Business.

Things You'll Need:

  • Monitor
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

    Click "Start."

  2. Step 2

    Click "Control Panel."

  3. Step 3

    Click "Appearance and Personalization."

  4. Step 4

    Click "Personalization."

  5. Step 5

    Click "Display Settings."

  6. Step 6

    Move the slider under Resolution. The resolution changes as you move the slider.

  7. Step 7

    Click "Apply."

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure you have the latest drivers for your monitor and video card. This may give you more resolutions as well as better performance.
  • LCD monitors can support higher resolutions than CRT monitors.
  • You may need an administrator password to change the resolution.
  • Images may become jagged or blurry at very low resolutions.
