Darts is a classic British pub game in which darts are thrown at a circular scoring board (cork unless you're playing with an electronic set). There are varying scores for different areas of the board with the center being the infamous "bull's-eye." Here are some steps that will help you to play darts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Darts
  • A dart board
  1. Step 1

Familiarize yourself with the scoring system. There are points designating which areas are worth particular amounts of points. Note, too, that the thin areas are "doubles" and "triples" which multiply the normal point values.

  2. Step 2

Decide what game to play. The most common games are '01 games where players are assigned points (301, 501, 1001, etc.) and work backward until they score exactly 0. Going past 0 points is a "bust" and causes the player to lose their turn.

  3. Step 3

Play Shanghai. Shanghai is a dart game, in which players try to "close" each sector of the board in order starting with one, going to 20, and ending by hitting the bull's-eye. The player that ends with the most points (try to hit triples) wins.

  4. Step 4

Play high score. This is the easiest to play. Each player is given a set of darts, they agree on a number of turns, and whoever ends with the high score wins.

  5. Step 5

Warm up. Most regular players will allow for a warm-up throwing period where each player throws a few darts.

  6. Step 6

Decide who goes first. The traditional way to decide is to each throw a dart with the highest scoring player going first. You can use any method, though, such as who has a birthday next.

  7. Step 7

Alternate turns following the rules for the particular type of darts you have chosen.

Tips & Warnings
  • The most important way to develop a consistent throw is not by mimicking professionals, but by practicing your own style consistently.
  • Fluid, finessed throws are more successful than rigid, rapid throws.
  • Do not play for money unless you know your opponent are extremely confident in your skills. Dart hustlers are common in bars and pubs.
  • The dart board should be five feet eight inches off the floor. The line should be seven feet and nine and a quarter inches from the board. Official darts cannot weigh more than fifty-five grams.
