The Hatch Shell in Boston is most well known as the venue that hosts the annual Boston Pops Orchestra Fourth of July celebration. But almost every weekend in the summer you can enjoy an outdoor concert at the Hatch Shell in Boston for free!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cooler for drinks and snacks
  • Binoculars
  • Blanket or lawn chairs
  • Camera
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Umbrella
  1. Step 1

Find out what’s happening. You can find a calendar of events at the Hatch Shell Web site, or give them a call at (617) 727-1300.

  2. Step 2

Plan to arrive early. Seating is general admission, so to speak. There are no permanent seats, just a lawn and the Hatch Shell. So if you want to get a good view, show up early.

  3. Step 3

Check the weather. Since you’ll be outdoors, it’s good to know what kind of conditions you’ll need to dress for.

  4. Step 4

Drive there. The Hatch Shell is located on the Esplanade. Take exit 26 off I-93, follow Storrow Drive (bear right at exit) until you reach the Arthur Fiedler footbridge (it’s small and orange). The Hatch Shell is right along the river, near the Copley Square exit.

  5. Step 5

Take public transportation. If you’re riding the red line, get out at the Charles/MGH stop and cross the Arthur Fiedler footbridge. If you are riding the green line, get out at Arlington and walk up Arlington Street toward the river and to the footbridge.

  6. Step 6

Enjoy yourself! Bring a blanket, coolers for snacks, binoculars, sunscreen and your camera and soak in the sun as well as some quality tunes.

Tips & Warnings
  • It’s a good idea to buy commuter rail tokens in advance, especially on busy days like July 4.
  • Be courteous to the elderly and disabled. Treat every concertgoer with respect and allow everyone to have a good time.
  • A parasol to shade the sun or a tarp or umbrella to keep dry in the rain are good things to bring along.
  • Concession stands are available as well.
  • Public restrooms and handicapped restrooms are available.
  • Bags and coolers may be subject to search, so leave the contraband at home.
  • Alcoholic beverages, grills and glass containers are prohibited.
