How to Find a Nude Beach in Vermont

Vermont is, in most cases, a place where people are comfortable in their skin. Known too for winding rivers amidst the mountains and plenty of swimming holes, it's not too hard to find a location that is clothing optional.

Looking for a spot for skinny-dipping and nude sunbathing? The Bolton Potholes might be for you. From Route 2, travel as if you were going to the Bolton Ski Area. Take a left onto Bolton Valley Road and keep going past the ski area. Park on one of the side dirt road and walk down the hill.

In the Burlington area, the most common nude beach is at Red Rocks on Lake Champlain. Take Exit 13 from Interstate 89. Take a left at the light, then turn right onto Queen City Parkway. Follow until Central Ave and turn left. Park and hike to the back of the park, then head down to the water's edge.

Want to explore an area sculpted by glaciers? Visit Lake Willoughby in Westemere. Take the Lyndon exit from Interstate 91, following Route 5 into West Burke. Follow the right fork onto 5A, which will take you directly to Willoughby Lake. Park in the first lot on your left (or along the highway if the lot is full). Follow the trail to the southwest cove to reach the nude beach.

The Ledges are another great area that serves as a nude beach in Vermont, located in Wilmington on Harriman Lake. Take Route 9 west from Brattleboro. Turn off onto Route 100 south to the reservoir. Travel just over a mile, turn left and follow the road to the picnic area. Once parked, follow the path from the picnic area into the woods until you reach the other nude beach-goers.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are statewide ordinances against lewd and lascivious behavior. However, many find that they aren't bothered.

  • If you are going to Red Rocks, be sure that you do not go to the main beach where nudity is not allowed.

Starr farm beach on the north shore in Burlington is known as a nude beach. As with other nude beaches in Vermont there is a "clothing" area and a "clothing optional" area. Then of course there is Rock River (which is also not really a beach) and Huntington Gorge (swimming hole with waterfalls). Oh, and there is also Clarendon Gorge.

The Ledges is not really a beach. It is really a bunch of big rocks/boulders that overlook Harriman Dam. There is a need for good walking shoes if you go there. It is private property on which being au naturale is allowed. There are no real nude beaches in VT.
