How to Find a Nude Beach in Maine

Maine offers a number of areas that can be used for nude recreation. To an extent, many swimming holes can be used as a nude beach. Here is how to find them.

  • Gulf Hagas Gorge, located along the Pleasant River, can easily be reached from Bangor. Take Interstate 95 to RT 16. Continue traveling north to RT 11, then travel west on Katahdin Iron Works Road. Park, then hike along the trail to your desired swimming hole.

  • There are several swimming holes in the Rumford Area, some of which are clothing optional. To access all of them, you will follow various directions off of RT 17 leaving Rumford, Maine.

  • The Sandy River in Farmington is located near the University of Maine and offers some sandy beaches.

  • There are a number of swimming holes along RT 25 on the Ossipee and Saco Rivers. Some are more secluded and therefore more conducive to nude use.

  • While not a nude beach, the Sherwood Forest Club offers nudists a chance to get together during the long New England winters and participate in organized summer activities.

Tips & Warnings

  • Trust your instincts. If something tells you that you shouldn't strip down, it's probably a good idea not to.
  • Lake Wood once had a well-known nude area. However, this is no longer the case.
