How to Go Camping at the Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky gives its guests access to the world's longest cave system. A camping trip to Mammoth Cave National Park will let you hike, bike, paddle and take guided tours of the caves—and it will give you a chance to kick back with family or friends and to catch up without any of the normal day-to-day distractions.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Plan ahead. How long do you plan to be out camping? When do you want to camp?

  2. Step 2

    Consider what type of campground you will need. Mammoth Cave National Park has several camping options. Mammoth Cave Campground charges $17 for individual sites, $20 for group sites and $40 for VIP sites. Maple Springs Group Camp is $30. Houchins Ferry Campground is $12. Senior discounts are available at several of the campgrounds.

  3. Step 3

    Call (800) 967-2283 to make reservations, or visit the national parks reservation site (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

    Pack for your trip. Only bring as much gear, food, water and clothing as you will need.

  5. Step 5

    Head to the park. If you didn't make make reservations ahead of time, select an available camp site and register for the site following the instructions at the campground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be aware of the rules associated with the campsites and follow them. Respect other campers and the national park.
  • Follow safety instructions, especially while on a cave tour.
  • If you plan to camp in the backcountry, you will need to register for free permits at the Visitor Center Information Desk.
  • Park information is available by calling (270) 758-2424.
  • Make reservations for cave tours when you make your campground reservations to save time and get in on the tours you want to take.
  • Camping is only allowed in designated areas of the park.
  • Always secure your valuable items.
