Unfortunately for same-sex couples who wish to make their relationship officially recognized, many states, including Illinois, still ban same-sex marriages. There are many different things, both large and small, that you can do to show your support and raise public awareness of this issue—and sometimes it’s the little things that really make a difference!

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet connection
  • Badges, T-shirts or bumper stickers
  1. Step 1

    Talk to people you know about same-sex marriage—discuss reasons why it’s important that everyone has the right to an officially recognized relationship regardless of their sexual orientation.

  2. Step 2

    Write letters to your local newspapers or other publications for their “Letters” pages to air your views and prompt further discussion.

  3. Step 3

    Make an email signature that links to a Web site such as Gay Marriage News or the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois.

  4. Step 4

    Get a badge, button or bumper sticker and wear it with pride!

  5. Step 5

    Join an advocate group in your area and take part in scheduled activities such as rallies, marches or fund-raising events.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you deal with the public in your place of work, note that there may be rules against wearing badges or buttons that make political statements—check with your boss to make sure it’s OK to wear these things.
