Visiting massive glaciers, kayaking the Kenai Fjords and taking a boat tour to look for Orca whales are just a few of the draws of the Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska. Camping in this snowy wilderness gives you access to hiking, mountaineering and scenic flights over a wild landscape carved by ice and time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Plan ahead. How long do you plan to be out camping? When do you want to camp?
Step2
Consider your transportation needs. Shuttle buses, taxis and even water taxis are available and may help make getting around easier.
Step3
Determine what activities you might want to participate in. Boat tours and flight seeing trips can be booked in advance.
Step4
Pack for your camping trip to Kenai Fjords National Park. Only bring as much gear, food, water and clothing as you will need to have available, and be sure that you are prepared for all weather conditions.
Step5
Arrive at the park and find a campsite. A campground in the Exit Glacier section of the park has 12 tent sites for walk-in camping, pit toilets and a pump for drinking water. Camping here is free, and has a 14-day limit. Cooking or storing food at the campsites is not allowed, but a central area for food storage, cooking and eating is provided.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pets are not allowed in the Exit Glacier campground.
  • Other camping options are available in the nearby Chugach National Forest. Get more information from the Seward Parks & Recreation Department or the Seward Chamber of Commerce.
  • Campsites in Exit Glacier often fill by early evening in the late summer.
