How to Be an Advocate for Same-Sex Marriage in Florida

Unfortunately for same-sex couples who wish to make their relationship official, many states, including Florida, still don’t recognize their right to marry. You don’t need to be gay yourself to realize that this is an important Human Rights issue, and there are lots of different things you can do to raise public awareness.

• Internet connection
• Badges, T-shirts or bumper stickers

1. Talk to friends, family and co-workers about same-sex marriage—discuss reasons why it’s important that everyone has the right to an officially recognized relationship regardless of their sexual orientation.
2. Write letters to your local newspapers or other publications for their “Letters” pages to prompt discussion about same-sex marriage.
3. Get a badge, button or bumper sticker and wear it with pride!
4. Make an email signature that links to a Web site such as Gay Marriage News or the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida.
5. Find out about advocate groups in your area and join one. Take part in activities that raise public awareness about same-sex marriage issues.

• If you deal with the public in your place of work, note that there may be rules against wearing badges or buttons that make political statements—check with your boss to make sure it’s OK to wear these things.
