How to Find a Nude Beach in the San Francisco Bay Area

Nude Beaches are increasing in popularity. As our society lowers its inhibitions, we are finding freedom in letting go of some previously accepted limitations. Questioning these traditions helps us see that we do have minds of our own that can decide what is and is not acceptable. Use this information to help you find a nude beach in the San Francisco Bay area.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Land's End Beach is your first option. It is part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area. Travel on Geary Boulevard to the Cliff House. You will find a trail at the end of the Cliff House's parking lot. Once on the path, you will travel past trash cans and a bench. Then you will come to a place that has a road to the right that you do not want to take (it goes to a golf course). When you pass another bench, you will see that the only way you can go on the trail is to the right. At this point, turn left and you will see some stairs. Go down the stairs and then to the left to more stairs. Go down those stairs and you will be on a path that leads to a sandy and rocky cove that is about a quarter mile in length. Swimming is not allowed at this beach, nor is the beach family friendly.

  2. Step 2

North Baker Beach is another option. This is a clean, flat beach that is very popular with all age groups and sexual orientations. You can reach the beach by traveling on the 29 Sunset bus. Or, if you prefer to drive, head north on 25th Avenue and then turn right on Gibson Road. Gibson will lead you to the east parking lot of North Baker Beach. The nude area of the beach is located on the right of the beach. Because of some reported public sex, this beach is not recommended for families.

  3. Step 3

Golden Gate Bridge Beach is a combination of three coves adjacent to one another. Primarily a gay beach, Golden Gate is difficult to reach. The path leading to the beach is somewhat dangerous with poison oak along the way. This beach is not good for swimming. Sexual acts are not unheard of, so this beach is one to skip for families. To reach this location, follow the directions to North Baker Beach in step two. Then, after parking in the main parking lot, head north on Lincoln Boulevard. You will pass a sand ladder leading to North Baker. When you are just past the ladder, take the gated dirt road that leads to Battery Crosby. Once you get to the old fort, take a trail on the side. Follow this trail through twists and turns until you reach the beach.

  4. Step 4

Fort Funston Beach is popular with dog owners. Recreation includes hang gliding and horse back riding. The GGNRA rangers patrol this area, which does not officially allow nude sunbathing and will issue citations. If you are willing to go anyway, go south on Great Highway. Then, turn right onto Skyline Boulevard. Go through the first light and you will see signs for the beach. Park in the west end of the parking lot and go down the steps at the southwest end. Turn right at the end of the steps and walk towards the dunes. Go to an area as far removed from the parking lot as you can get.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring a sweater or jacket when visiting Land's End Beach. The wind and fog can often create chilly conditions.
  • While on Land's End Beach, some people construct rock piles to protect themselves from blowing sand.
  • When traveling to North Baker Beach, be sure to bring shelter for your dog and flip flops to protect your feet from the hot sand. Come early in order to find a parking spot. If you are riding a motorbike to this area, do not park in car spaces. You will run the risk of having your bike vandalized by annoyed drivers. Instead, park in the bicycle area near the fence.
  • Do not participate in sexual activity at North Baker Beach. This problem is increasing and the GGNRA has put the beach on notice.
  • Do not attempt to reach Golden Gate by swimming around the North Baker rocks. A drowning has occurred as a result of this activity.
  • Do not use Fort Funston Beach as a nude beach on the weekends. The park rangers are not tolerant of nude sunbathers at any time, so try to avoid them.
