In Marin County, you can find a nude beach at Kirby Cove. The area is officially closed because of trails that have suffered extensive rain damage. However, many people are beginning to rediscover the area and say that some of the places are in decent condition. The beach does contain as much small rock as it does sand. If you are interested in visiting Kirby Cove, take Highway 101 and exit onto Alexander Avenue. Go under the highway, away from Sausalito. Continue for another half mile and you will see the parking lot on the left side of the road. You will also see some chemical toilets. Once you have parked, you will walk down a path that is blocked by a metal gate so that cars cannot drive down the path.

The very popular Muir Beach is also located in Marin County. The conditions are ideal for nude sunbathing. The beach is easy to reach from the parking lot and there are not any odd trails to follow. In addition, swimming is actually advised in the area. The surroundings are beautiful and the people are friendly. Of course, there are some drawbacks such as occasional wind and fog. However, the pluses generally outweigh the minuses. The only time the police have raided the beach was back in 2001 when they received complaints. They say that if they do not receive complaints, they are content to leave people alone. You will find Muir Beach by following Highway 1 north out of San Francisco. Once you reach milepost 5.7, take a left on Pacific Way. Park in Muir parking lot. Once you are parked, you will walk on a path and then a boardwalk onto the sand. Turn north and follow the beach until you come to a mound of rocks. The "clothing optional" section of the beach starts just north of those rocks.
