How to Perform the Missionary Sexual Position

This position gets its name from 19th century Christian missionaries, who preached to their converts that animal-like positions were unnatural, and that having the man on top was the only proper sexual position. In this common position, a man is laying on top of a woman and supporting his own upper body. Missionary position is a good place to start if you're new to sex, but it may not always provide the best stimulation.

1. The woman should lie on her back with her legs spread.
2. The man then positions himself between her legs and insert his penis into her vagina.
3. The man should use his arms to support his upper body, and then move his pelvis in and out rhythmically.
4. The woman can may choose to hold her legs open or wrap them around the man.

Tips & Warnings

• This is a good beginner position. It is easy to do, and there is minimal risk for strain.
• This position allows for face-to-face kissing and caressing.
• This position is good for pregnant women. If you are pregnant, you may want to spread your legs farther apart and hold them with your hands.
• Talk to your partner about how you like to be stimulated.
• You may want to add manual clitoral stimulation in this position.
• Use a condom to reduce the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
