At the end of each summer, people around the country visit state fairs. Today these fairs offer more than just pie-eating contests, butter statues and pig parades--they also play host to some of the biggest musical acts of the season.

  • Cooler
  • Refreshments
  • Rain gear
  • Tickets

Step1
Check the fair's schedule, either online or in your local paper, and get the lineup of who’s playing where and when. Most fairs feature acts representing various musical genres, from rock to country, jazz to hip-hop.
Step2
Get tickets. Most of the big-name shows at the fair require a separate ticket in addition to fair admission. Shows can sell out fast so plan ahead and buy early.
Step3
Decide how to get there. Parking can be a nightmare, so see if public transportation is an option.
Step4
Pack a cooler. If you are allowed to bring a cooler into the show, bring snacks and beverages. Otherwise take extra cash to purchase refreshments.
Step5
Don’t forget a chair. Many tickets are for general admission, typically "lawn seats." To stay comfortable during the show, bring a chair or blanket.
Step6
Take extra clothes. Concerts at the fair are usually outdoors, vulnerable to the ever-changing weather. Be prepared and bring rain gear, plus a jacket for cooler temperatures.
Step7
Arrive early. If there is assigned seating, you'll beat the crowds. For general admission shows, you'll want make sure you get a choice spot.
