Not literally dark. Not like E.T. and Starman--which I guess are both dark and "dark". But, no. These are dark AND difficult. Try them while consuming a tub of haagen dazs and a couple of Hostess cupcakes--just to juxtapose the mood a bit. Or, if you like to stew inside heady filmmaking, a big, steaming brisket would be more appropriate:

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Start with Neil LaBute. The man is unhinged--personally and professionally. Not all his films are gems--for instance, you can skip Nurse Betty--but In The Company Of Men will haunt you for weeks.
Step2
Todd Solondz. You know him from Welcome to the Dollhouse. But get to know him from Happiness--I feel like he's a more caustic Paul Thomas Anderson.
Step3
I'd say Darren Aronofsky. But you've already seen Pi and Requiem for a Dream. But please. You didn't see The Fountain, did you?
Step4
There's also this other little known director. His name is Alfred Hitchcock. He's wicked good.
You've seen Psycho, Vertigo, North by Northwest, The Birds and Rear Window--obvi. But now try Rope, Strangers on a Train, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Notorious and Spellbound.
Step5
And of course you've seen Polanski's Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown and The Pianist. But be sure you familiarize yourself with Frantic, Bitter Moon and Repulsion. Also become a time-travelling lesbian so you can go back to 1965 and make out with Catherine Deneuve.
