Replacing a video card is a simple process, provided you take necessary care and precautions. Here’s how to replace the video card that came with your computer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Choose a new video card that is compatible with your computer system.
Step2
Uninstall the existing video card drivers. Right-click "My Computer," select "Properties," click "Hardware" and click "Device Manager." In the Display Adapter section, double-click your existing video card. In the Properties menu that appears, select the Driver tab and press the "Uninstall" button.
Step3
Remove your existing video card. To prevent any shocks, wear an antistatic wrist strap. Turn off your PC and disconnect the power supply. Open the CPU case and locate the AGP slot of your motherboard (above the white PCI slots). Unscrew the video card from the back plate and take it out.
Step4
Insert the new video card firmly and completely. Screw it to the back plate.
Step5
Install the new drivers. Windows XP will guide you through the installation process. For other operating systems, open the Control Panel through the Start Menu. Click the "Add/Remove Hardware" option to activate the installation wizard.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read the instruction manual that comes with your new video card before you install it.
  • Check your video card vendor's Web site for updates and new products.
