How to Install a Control Switch for a Ceiling Fan

To control your ceiling fan from the ground, wire the switch to do more than just power the fan on or off.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Turn off the power to the area in which you will be working.

  2. Step 2

    Unscrew the switch cover plate and remove it.

  3. Step 3

    Pull the old switch out carefully to expose the wires.

  4. Step 4

    Unscrew the wire nuts to remove the wires.

  5. Step 5

    Take the old switch to the store to get a control switch that will fit perfectly. It should have the same number and type of wires. You will also need a new cover to fit the switch.

  6. Step 6

    Reconnect the wires from the wall to the control switch.

  7. Step 7

    Once the wires are firmly attached, mount the switch back in the wall and replace the new cover.

  8. Step 8

    Screw the cover in place and turn the power back on.
