How to Replace or Install a Dimmer Switch

A dimmer switch is easy to replace, even if it’s malfunctioning. Follow these steps and you’ll be done in no time.

Things You’ll Need:

• Screwdriver

1. Turn off the power to the area in which you will be working.
2. Unscrew the switch cover plate and remove it.
3. Pull the old switch out carefully to expose the wires.
4. Unscrew the wire nuts to remove the wires.
5. Take the broken switch to the store to get a replacement that will fit perfectly. It should have the same number and type of wires.
6. Back home, reconnect the wires from the wall to the dimmer switch.
7. Mount the switch back in the wall once the wires are firmly attached and replace the cover.
8. Screw the cover in place and turn the power back on.
