How to Replace or Install a Dimmer Switch

A dimmer switch is easy to replace, even if it’s malfunctioning. Follow these steps and you’ll be done in no time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Turn off the power to the area in which you will be working.
Step2
Unscrew the switch cover plate and remove it.
Step3
Pull the old switch out carefully to expose the wires.
Step4
Unscrew the wire nuts to remove the wires.
Step5
Take the broken switch to the store to get a replacement that will fit perfectly. It should have the same number and type of wires.
Step6
Back home, reconnect the wires from the wall to the dimmer switch.
Step7
Mount the switch back in the wall once the wires are firmly attached and replace the cover.
Step8
Screw the cover in place and turn the power back on.
