A ceiling fan with a light can bring a level of comfort to a room without sacrificing your lighting. One of the first steps in installing a ceiling fan is to install a brace to keep the fan secure.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ladder
  • Tools recommended by your instructions
  • Power screwdriver
  • 2x4
  1. Step 1

Read the directions that come with your fan. The instructions that come with your package and/or the advice of an electrician should supersede any direction you find herein.

  2. Step 2

Turn off the power to the area in which you are working.

  3. Step 3

Remove the existing fixture and disconnect the wiring.

  4. Step 4

If possible, you should install a 2x4 between the ceiling joists to support the workbox and the weight of the fan. This can be done from the attic.

  5. Step 5

If not possible, then install a metal brace from the room below through the hole from the fixture. The workbox should then be attached to the brace.
